Awards season 2024 is in full swing, and with it comes the red carpet fashion to define the trends for the year to come. So we’re using the awards as inspiration not just for our to-watch lists but also for to-wear styles and outfit ideas.

No style category is better served during the awards show carpets and ceremonies than formalwear. Between the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, Governors Award, and the Emmys so far, to name just a few, suits and tuxedos have taken center stage, wowed, and proven which new colors, details, and ways to style a suit are set to be big this year.

Here's our guide to men's formalwear trends based on awards season style from some of the best dressed and biggest stars.

Tonal Beige

From what the 2024 television and film awards shows have shown us so far, grey, beige, "greige"–a trendy hybrid of the two–brown, and tan are taking over as some of the leading popular suit colors. These shades work so well in part because they offer something fresh with their light, less common look compared to standbys like navy or charcoal suits while still remaining classic and neutral. This way, beige and tan suits manage to look both current and timeless.

These specific looks from Tyler James Williams and Pedro Pascal also emphasize a few trends that go beyond color. Both actors are sporting their beige formal outfits in monochromatic styling, which remains popular. They show us that when the whole suit or tuxedo ensemble is kept to the same confined color palette, there is an emphasis on texture and pattern, from layering in knit pieces to adding pinstripe suit detailing, selecting the perfect tie accessories, and more.

We also can't overlook the rosette trend, which, if Tyler James Williams' look tells us anything, is still going strong. Lapel pins are the perfect use case for fabric flowers, and this year it looks like oversized rosettes will be the way to go.

Blue Tuxedos

Blue tuxedos are having a moment with 2024 formalwear and menswear trends. While navy tuxedos have long proven to be an equally classic alternative to the traditional black tuxedo, there are a few modernizations emerging on the red carpets this season. Firstly, this blue tux color variation is expanding beyond just deep, dark navy; lighter and more complex blues, like the periwinkle dusty blue tuxedo John Mulaney wore to the Creative Arts Emmys 2024 are emerging. For the light blue tuxedo blazers like this one, we love keeping the satin tuxedo lapel the same color as the rest of the tux jacket rather than the more common black lapel.

Secondly, we're seeing blue tux jackets, regardless of the shade from midnight to sky blue, paired exclusively with black tuxedo pants. This combination really emphasizes the contrast between the two colors and draws extra attention to the blue of the jacket. For navy tuxedo jackets, this is a great way to make the dark blue color pop. The high-shine lapel pins Simu Liu added to his navy blazer also make a big difference in drawing eyes to the deep blue color.

All-Black Tuxedos

Black tuxedos are the standard for formalwear and the default, most-seen men's red carpet style year after year, show after show, award after award. This year, though, celebrities are showing off a new take on the classic black tuxedo that's all about the styling: all-black tuxedo outfits. Instead of sticking with the typical white tuxedo shirt, accessories, and pairings in favor of all black everything.

A black tuxedo shirt shakes up the look. And it's not just the tuxedo shirt where we're seeing the added black elements, either. These all-black red carpet outfits also feature black men's necklaces and jewelry, black watchbands, black shoes, and most often, no bow tie at all. Suddenly, the ensemble becomes edgy and fresh.

With such a solid, dark foundation from the all-black tuxedo look, this red carpet styling is also the perfect place to add in unique details. For Timothée Chalamet at the 2024 Golden Globes, that played out with sophisticated polka dot sequin detailing throughout tuxedo blazer. For Donald Glover at the 2024 Emmys, we saw the addition of velvet, piped swirling button details, and floral embroidery. For other celebrities, there were sheer elements, metallic features, funky lapel shapes, and playful proportions to liven up the all-black theme, too.

Pops of Red

Red was the "it" color for Autumn 2023, and the 2024 awards show red carpet looks are making it obvious that the red trend isn't going anywhere this year. In fact, pops of red are only getting bigger, bolder, and more popular. 2024 celebrity suit style proves that there is more than one way to pull off the trend and make a massive fashion impact with the color red.

Bold, red-all-over looks are one way to go, like Barry Keoghan does with his full red suit with checkered pattern detailing. Darker, more subdued versions, like maroon and burgundy suits or even burgundy tuxedos are also popping up on the red carpet, growing in popularity, and delivering the punchy fun of the color while remaining a bit more classic and less intimidating.

Another approach to the pop of red trend is to keep the base of the outfit neutral and add just one small, bright red accessory to hit a cool note and let the red really jump out. Jeremy Allen White's 2024 Critics Choice Awards look is a perfect example, combining the all-black tuxedo trend with the red style: his black pinstripe suit–complete with the no bow tie look that black-on-black red carpet tuxedos are favoring this year–is really just a backdrop for his statement-making red rose lapel pin.
