How to: Make sure your suit fits

When your suit arrives, try it on! Learn what makes a perfect fit and make sure you've got it.

The seam on the top of the shoulder should meet the sleeve where your arm meets your shoulder without noticeable pulling or wrinkles.

You should be able to close the top button of your jacket without deep wrinkles forming at the closure (too small), and you shouldn't have enough room to pull the jacket more than an inch or so away from your chest and torso (too big).

Your sleeves should hit right around the top of your wrist bone when your arms are straight down at your sides, exposing about a half inch of the cuff of your dress shirt.

The bottom of your jacket should line up with the bottom of your pant zipper and the middle of your hand (where your thumb crease meets your palm) when you are standing straight with your arms down at your sides.

A well-fitted jacket doesn't have any pulling fabric, allows the top button to close comfortably, and isn't too baggy or long.

Your suit pants should stay up comfortably without risk of splitting when you move.

Your pants should slightly hug your hips and seat but should not be tight enough that the pockets pop out and or the pants are difficult to sit in (too small). You shouldn't have so much room around your legs that the pants look baggy or surrounding your waist that you need a tight belt (too big).

Men's cut suit pants come with an unfinished hem to allow you to create the perfect pant length and break for your height and style preferences. Women's cut pants have a finished, notched hem that should hit around your ankle, to your preference.

Common Jacket Fit Concerns & Solutions

If you are in the Slim fit, this may indicate it would be best to stick with the same numerical size but switch to the Modern fit (example: Slim 44 Regular → Modern 44 Regular). Designed with a straighter cut through the shoulders and waist, Modern jackets naturally leave more room around the jacket buttons and the belly. Alternatively, going up one size in the Slim fit will increase the jacket size by 2 inches around both the chest and the waist. If you're in a Modern cut already, go up one size.

Tip: make sure to only close the top button of your jacket.

We want the sleeve of the jacket to end right at your wrist bone, showing about a half inch of the cuff of your dress shirt when your arms are down by your sides. If you need just a bit of extra length, the sleeves can be let out a half inch or so at the tailor. If you need to switch to a longer length (for example from Regular to Long), the sleeves AND the body of the jacket will increase in length by about one and a quarter inches.

Go up to the next size in the Slim fit.

Switch to Men's cut Modern fit. Find your comparable Men's cut size.

Common Pant Fit Concerns & Solutions

If you are in the Slim fit, go up one number in the Modern fit (example: you currently have size Slim 35 → exchange up to the Modern 36).

This is an easy fix! When you take your pants in to be hemmed, just ask the tailor to slim the legs down a little, especially in the calf.

Switch to the Men's cut Slim fit pants. Find your comparable Men's cut size.
